Waverly Central High School Parent/Family Involvement Policy Your Involvement Matters Waverly Central High School belief is that today there is undeniable evidence that parent involvement makes a difference in students’ learning. Parent involvement can lead to improved student achievement, better attendance and a more positive attitude toward school. Teachers gain a better understanding of families’ backgrounds, cultures, concerns, goals, and needs. Our school’s School Improvement Policy has addressed the need for more parental involvement in Components one and five. Component one, which is the Leadership Team, is a collaboration of stakeholder groups that includes parents as the major part. Component five, which is the Action Plan, establishes a timeline for this school year that addresses the need to communicate goal-attainment evidence to all stakeholders. Parents are informed through the school about their child’s course of study. Web addresses are listed periodically on students’ report cards. Teachers are to have copies of their course of study at all times especially at parental conference meetings. Teachers are to inform the parents about the course of study during the conferences. Parents are informed that if they do not have access to the internet a copy will be provided by the school. Our school holds an Open House for all parents on the Tuesday before school starts. This Open House is advertised in the local newspaper and radio. Parents are given the opportunity to meet with the teaching staff, see classrooms, and see teaching materials. The local radio station’s owner and our school committee have met on different occasions to discuss means of keeping parents informed. The School Improvement Plan will address a certain day and time that school events and news will be announced. Progress reports are sent home every fifteen school days, report cards every six weeks, and state test scores are sent home with the students. Parents are able to call the school between 7:00 and 3:30 to ask questions. All questions are to be replied to that day. Two parent/teacher meetings are held annually to discuss student progress. Home Surveys are sent home to parents for them to rate our school on such issues as safety and drug usage. Parents are encouraged to suggest ways of improving our school. Parents are notified about supplemental services such as free tutoring offered to their children after and during school. Our school’s goal is to establish communication methods that will provide easy access to information about what goes on in our school. |
