M.M.S. Family and Community Involvement Policy

2005-2006

The vision of McEwen Middle School is to provide all students with a safe and challenging learning environment that allows multiple opportunities for students to develop personal learning styles, interests and strengths. M.M.S. wants all students to have the skills necessary to reach the potential that will enable them to survive in the present and thrive in the future. In order to achieve this vision, M.M.S. stakeholders believe that the administration, teachers, parents and the community share the responsibility for the education of students. Collaboration is essential in providing a quality education and promoting social values for all students.

M.M.S. developed this Family and Community Involvement Policy through a committee comprised of M.M.S. administration, teachers, support staff and parent representatives. This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as appropriate to meet the changing needs of the school and the community. A copy of this policy will be distributed to each student at M.M.S., with copies also available in the school office, as well as in each classroom. The Family Friendly Survey was also given to all parents of students enrolled in M.M.S. during the 2004-2005 school year. These survey results also impacted the development of this family involvement policy.

In an effort to encourage positive communication between the school and parents, M.M.S.:

schedules regular parent-teacher conferences at varying times to allow greater participation,

schedules an open house at the beginning of each school year to encourage family involvement,

schedules a Rising 6th Grade Orientation Program for students and families promoting from the elementary school (held during the day for all 5th grade students and at night for families),

collaborates with McEwen High School in the Freshman Orientation Program and developing 8th grade plans,

provides parents with documentation of student progress through graded student work, quizzes, tests, projects, etc., as well as mid-six week progress reports for students performing below standard, six week report cards, and standardized achievement test scores yearly,

distributes copies of the M.M.S. Pow Wow school newsletter, the Helping Students LearnTM newsletter published by The Parent Institute, and the What’s Up with Starting Middle School booklet published by Channing Bete, Inc.,

provides before- and after-school tutoring for students seeking extra assistance and remedial practice through the 21st Century Tutoring Program,

distributes copies of the student handbook with rules, policies, guidelines and expected student performance to all students, as well as notification of handicap accessibility, discrimination/harassment of students procedures, unsafe school choice policy, Tennessee Department of Education contact information and child advocacy group contact information,

supplies all students with a student plan book to record assignments and to aid in parent communications,

notifies parents of their right to access their student’s official records, explanation of the curriculum in use at M.M.S., and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet,

provides opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, disabilities, and migrant to the extent practicable (information is distributed in alternative formats upon request), and

allows parental/teacher requests for training and/or parent involvement activities to be submitted to the principal, who will present it to the Parent Involvement Committee for consideration. Reasonable support for parental involvement activities, requested by parents/teachers, shall be provided.

The mission of McEwen Middle School is to provide a challenging learning experience in a safe environment where students are encouraged to develop positive characteristics that will enable them to become contributing citizens.
